CAMBODIA

In 2004, Ron travelled to just about every town in Cambodia to update most of the Rough Guide to the country; the second edition appeared in 2005. Until recently, Cambodia was considered a dangerous place to travel due to the presence of the Khmer Rouge, but since the group disbanded, the country has become more peaceful and more popular among travellers. Though there are still the harrowing sights of amputees and extreme poverty throughout the country, the people's optimism is almost palpable. Major roads are being surfaced and new hotels opening everywhere, offering much more to see than just Angkor Wat. If you're in the mood for adventure, check out any of these little-visited regions: Stung Treng, Banteay Chhmar, Koh Kong and Bokor National Park.
